The Red Signal Program

One mark. One moment. One life changed.

A zero-cost, silent safety signal that gives anyone experiencing intimate partner violence a private way to ask for help — during a routine medical visit.

BRING THIS TO YOUR CLINIC

How it Works

Ridiculously simple.
Almost zero cost.

The Signal

1

A patient places a red marker or red sticker on their urine specimen cup — a silent, discreet sign that they are not safe at home.

The Response

2

When nursing staff see that signal, they bring the patient back to a private room — alone — without anyone else knowing.

The Connection

3

In that private moment, trained staff connect the patient with the resources and support they need to take the next step toward safety.

Built on nationally recognized models

The Red Signal Program combines two proven approaches — Boston University’s “Red Dot to Disclose” model and the viral red-marker method that gained national attention — into a single, standardized protocol any clinic can implement.

It is fully aligned with screening recommendations from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (Grade B recommendation), and the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Research shows zero evidence that programs like this increase retaliation.

Domestic violence does not discriminate.
Neither do we.

The Red Signal Program protects anyone experiencing intimate partner violence — regardless of gender, age, orientation, or identity. One consistent signal. One safe way to ask for help. Available to every patient who walks through the door.

Community Partners

Stronger together

The Red Signal Program launched at Family Care of the Fox Cities, and healthcare organizations across the region are already implementing it and others working to bring the program into their practices.

Education

Stronger together

Harbor House and Christine Ann Domestic Abuse Services are providing critical training to all participating clinics on domestic violence, intimate partner violence, and strangulation — ensuring clinical teams are prepared to respond with the knowledge and care that moment demands.

Our goal is regional consistency: a victim who sees this signal at one clinic knows it means the same thing everywhere they receive care.

If even one more life is saved because a patient trusted us enough to put a red mark on a cup, then everything we’ve been through will have meant something.
